The German composer and piano-virtuoso Conrad Friedrich Hurlebusch, born in Lower Saxony, came in 1723 to Stockholm, following an invitation of the Swedish King Friedrich, a German and until 1723 landgrave of Hessen-Kassel, where they probably had met. In Stockholm Hurlebusch was employed as “Kammer-Musicus” and promised a position as organist at the German Church. This came to nothing, however, and because Hurlebusch could not prevail against the position of Johann Helmich Roman as first Court composer, he left Sweden already in April 1725. Of his works in Stockholm only these two cantatas are preserved.
The “Feste Musicale” is a cantata on the 10th anniversary of Frederic I. arrival in Sweden. He came into the Country 1715 through his wedding with Ulrika Eleonora and participated in a campaign against Norway, which is mentioned in the text of this cantata, which is in German. The Italian “Festeggiamento Musicale” was performed only a week later and is much shorter, indicating that this work was commissioned directly after the – apparently – successful first work. The cantata contains a pompous Ouverture in the French style, two soprano-arias and a Chorus.
