Carl Stenborg’s Opera about the rise of Gustaf Ericsson (Gustaf Wasa) to the Swedish throne – set into music a. o. by Johann Gottlieb Naumann – is an important landmark in the history of Swedish music in the 18th century. It opened on Oct. 29th 1784 Stenborg’s own new Opera-House, the “Swedish Comic Opera” in Stockholm, quite certainly the most important private theatre of the century. Stenborg was not only impresario and composer of many pieces which were performed there, he was also an accomplished singer (he almost certainly executed the demanding title-role in “Gustaf Ericsson” himself), actor, violinist and teacher! He was an important figure even in King Gustaf’s efforts to establish a national Opera in Sweden. With its spoken dialogue and a mix of light and heroic scenes the piece reminds both of “Opéra-comique” and the German “Singspiel”.
